I’d been to Comet Mine before, but I hadn’t seen everything they left behind. This time, Luna and I take the Jeep and trailer into Nevada’s mining country for a closer look—and find a rocky descent that has me getting out to walk the trail first. From lakeside camping at Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge to the old machinery at Comet Mine and the Bristol Well charcoal kilns, there’s plenty to explore out here. The mountains above Durango were named for silver that was never really there and this trail tells the whole story. In this episode of Recon America, I point the Jeep up La Plata Canyon toward Kennebec Pass, an easy backcountry route that climbs past waterfalls, old mining claims, and the ruins of towns that boomed and busted 150 years ago.
